MCH offers a full continuum of care for older adults, including independent living apartments, assisted living, short-term rehabilitation, memory care, and skilled nursing. Our campus also houses a children’s day care which is a frequent partner in intergenerational programming. The organization was founded in 1913 by a group of women associated with the Marquette Women’s League who recognized the need for compassionate care and residential services for seniors in the Milwaukee area.
MCH is recognized for its exceptional clinical quality. However, MCH is far more than just a place to live or receive needed services: it is a place to experience life at its fullest.
We understand MCH and MAM have a wonderful longtime partnership. Tell us more about your connection to our school!
The intergenerational programs organized between MCH and MAM are successful illustrations of community building between young and old. Being "across-the-street" neighbors for decades has provided many opportunities to come together and share talents and activities. For nearly 20 years, MCH has been the host site for the "Book Buddies" reading program in which first grade students are paired up with residents for weekly reading practice and conversation. Students benefit with improved reading skills, a sense of purpose and community service, and a more positive attitude towards aging. We've also coordinated additional programming, such as producing an intergenerational play, taking tours of the MAM gardens, and creating a recent presentation on life of Rosa Parks.
MCH and MAM Book Buddy Friends
Mary Cherniack, MCH's Volunteer Coordinator for the past 15 years, shares, "I've had many special experiences with Montessori students and Staff over the years. One of my favorite Intergenerational experiences is the long term success of our “Book Buddy” program. Many readers have improved and long term friendships have formed."
Mary's role in matching volunteers with important work is a win-win for all at MCH.
"I am proud of the relationships created between our volunteers and residents that I have helped transpire. Our volunteers enable us to hold many different events and outings that would not be possible without their time, talents and kindness."
